Go back to work or stay at home

One of the things I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is whether I should go back to work.

Here in Canada, I have been very very lucky to be able to be off work for the first year of baby’s life on maternity leave.  (more…)

Homemade natural household items

It all started one night when I was giving Chichi a bath.

I flipped her over to wash her back (in your typical froggy position), next thing I knew, she was spitting water out of her mouth because I’d accidentally dipped her too low.

Guilt. Guilt of the very worst kind (more…)

Kids on the news

Ever since I had Chichi, certain news articles will catch my eye, and break my heart

“Doctor convicted of waterboarding companion’s daughter, holding girl’s head under faucet”  (The Canadian Press, Feb 13, 2014.)

What to pack in your hospital bag

I gave birth at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. I had done quite a bit of research prior to giving birth on what to pack in my hospital bag, and I ended up only using perhaps 30% of what I brought. So for those woman giving birth at RCH, read on to see what I recommend for your birth!

Medela Nipple Shield

Due to Chichi’s extended stay in the hospital, she was introduced to bottle feeding before breastfeeding.  This was because I wasn’t in the hospital 24/7 to feed her, and also I simply didn’t have milk for her the first 4-5 days after I gave birth.  I probably produced a total of 1 drop of colostrum in the first 4 days (pitiful, I know!), which was obviously not sufficient to feed her.  Once my milk came in around day 5, I was able to pump loads of milk to bring to her in the hospital, that they fed via bottle.

I did, however, attempt to breastfeed her every chance I had while I was in the hospital. She was never able to get any milk from me, despite numerous attempts. She could latch on (or I thought), and she would suck but she wasn’t getting any milk.  (more…)

Hip Dysplasia in Infants

I remember I was so excited after my 20 week ultrasound because it meant I could officially start my baby shopping!

I also vividly remember walking into my local Babies R Us and getting totally overwhelmed.

Do we actually NEED all of this stuff?! And more importantly, is it all SAFE? (more…)
